“It is true what these Indian’s say. The person who takes this suffers. But that person is distinguished. That is how one learns, through suffering.” (Taussig, Michael T. Shamanism, Colonialism, and the Wild Man: A Study in Terror and Healing.)
This video was made in collaboration with Stephanie Burke. Through real emotional and physical pain, skins are shed, objects are activated, and personal bonds are strengthened. Commonplace and uncanny moments are compacted into the same space and the friction between releases the anguish necessary for learning and healing. The mystic and hackneyed aspects of the ceremony intertwine themselves in righteous harmony.
